This species of cat is native to North America, to be more specific, Maine. Being one of the largest cat species known, a male Maine Coon can weigh from 7 to 11 kg, and females can weigh from 5 to 7 kilos. Maine Coon has long fur that is longer on its throat, belly and hind legs, allowing it to live in rigid environments and protect itself from humidity and snow. These cats have shorter fur on the back and neck for protection from tangles from the undergrowth. They also have round legs with tufts of hair, hairy ears and a thick tail, making them purrfect for living in cold environments.

There are legends which have been passed down regarding these creatures over the centuries. One legend states that the Maine Coon is a cross between a Raccoon and a Lynx, which justifies the second part of its name “Coon.” Another legend says that Maine Coon cats look like this due to Queen Marie Antoinette freeing her six Angora cats during the French Revolution in Maine.

Although there are many legends regarding these majestic creatures, it is also commonly known that these creatures are a mix between Nordic longhair cats which arrived in North America with the Vikings and their contemporaries.
