One sunny day, Jolie Mejía and her family visited a seaside community in Peru called Punta Negra. Along the rocky coast overlooking the sea, Jolie and her family learnt of a love story of the purest form. Sometime after the family settled down on the beach, a random dog that appeared to be all alone approached them.
In an interview, the woman had this to say: “He didn’t seem abandoned. He wore a ribbon around his neck and his fur was clean.
I pet him, waiting for his owner, but minutes passed and no one came.” Although the dog loved Jolie’s pets, it was always gazing towards the ocean, and the woman soon learned why. Assuming that the dog was abandoned, the family considered adopting him, and when a local man walked by, the woman asked him about the dog.
The woman had this to say regarding what the family found out about the dog: “He explained that practically everyone in the area knows the dog and is very fond of him. He told us that the dog’s owner was a fisherman who passed away some time ago, and that the dog comes to the beach every day and stares out to sea.” The dog was holding vigil for the return of his friend and master, who would never return home.
After being moved by the touching story, the woman believes that about a year ago, the dog’s owner died out at sea, and ever since then, the dog has been waiting and watching out for him daily.
Although its owner may never return, the dog has found many friends who care for him. However sad the dog’s story is, it’s well known among the community, who give him shelter, feed him, and when the need arises, provide health care for him.
One of Punta Negra’s local veterinarian states that the dog is named Vaguito, and is cared for by a woman living nearby. By the end of the day, Jolie and her family bid farewell to Vaguito who still has his eyes cast out to sea. The bittersweet story of loyalty to a lost love, and the love and loyalty he found within the community is one that Jolie will never forget. Finally, Mejía had this to say: “I have a dog at home. I love dogs in general. His story really touched my heart.”
