Valerie Bertinelli has opened up about her mental health journey and the emotional impact of a “hidden bruise.” On February 12, 2023, she shared a video on Instagram, where she spoke candidly while walking and recording herself. In the background, the sound of her pants swishing as she walked was audible throughout the video.
In the video, Bertinelli revealed that she had stopped wearing those particular pants because an ex-partner had “mercilessly mocked” her. The ex would comment that if she weren’t so lazy and lost weight, her pants wouldn’t make that noise.
Bertinelli then explained her reference to a “hidden bruise,” saying, “Hidden bruises are the emotional, verbal, and mental scars that abuse leaves behind, the kind that people can’t see.”
She continued, “The work I’m doing to heal is paying off, so now that sound makes me laugh. I had put these jeans away for good, but after healing that hidden bruise, I can wear them again. Now, that sound represents freedom to me.”
Bertinelli admitted that she was initially hesitant to post the video, anticipating comments telling her to “let it go” and “move on.” However, she decided to share it, saying, “This is what moving on looks like. This is healing. And to those who can relate and feel heard, welcome—I’m just another member of your tribe.”
The response to her video was overwhelmingly positive, with many people offering supportive comments. One person wrote, “Healing isn’t linear, but look at you! You’re thriving.” Another expressed gratitude, saying, “Thank you for sharing the concept of hidden bruises.” A third commenter added, “So proud of you! Your strength inspires so many.”
Bertinelli’s story resonated with many who have dealt with their own hidden bruises. You can watch her video below, where she continues her journey of healing and self-discovery.
