Patti Scialfa Opens Up About Her Cancer Journey and Life With Bruce Springsteen
In the documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Patti Scialfa, longtime partner of Bruce Springsteen and a key member of the E Street Band, opened up about her personal battle with multiple myeloma, a rare form of blood cancer she was diagnosed with in 2018.
The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, revealed how Scialfa’s diagnosis has affected her ability to tour and perform regularly with the band.
Scialfa joined the E Street Band in 1984 and has enjoyed a successful career both as a member of the group and as a solo artist. Over the years, she has also worked with artists including Don Cherry, Narda Michael Walden, David Johansen, and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. Her creative work has extended beyond music, with credits as a composer and involvement in film and documentary projects.
Scialfa married Springsteen in 1991, and the couple have three children: sons Evan and Samuel and daughter Jessica.
Reflecting on returning to the stage following her diagnosis, Scialfa described performing as deeply rewarding but acknowledged that touring has become more challenging.
“Being back on stage felt so gratifying,” she said, explaining that traveling and performing can affect her immune system. As a result, she has had to be more careful about her schedule, travel and overall commitments.
That has meant making only occasional appearances onstage. Still, Scialfa remains grateful for every opportunity to perform alongside her husband and longtime bandmates.
“Occasionally, I make it to a performance or two and can engage in a few tunes on stage, which has been a delight,” she shared.
Although Scialfa did not attend the documentary’s premiere, she said the film offers audiences a rare glimpse into a more private side of her relationship with Springsteen and their life together.
“Reuniting onstage with Bruce is an absolute joy,” she said. “Every night on this tour allows the band a moment to revel.”
Despite the challenges she continues to face, Scialfa’s determination to enjoy music and family remains at the heart of her story. Her occasional appearances with the E Street Band have become especially meaningful moments for both her and the fans who have followed her career for decades.
